Digital cameras

A digital camera is a device used to capture real life images onto a digital format. These images can be changed, or edited, using a number of photographic software packages, and can be exported for email, web, or print.

You can use a printer to print out these images as photographs, posters, post cards, business cards or onto any other format you like.

Keyboards A keyboard is an input device used for typing. Each letter and character is printed on keys. Various standard of keyboards exist, South Africa normally uses the American keyboard standard. Some South Africans prefer the UK layout.
Mice A mouse is an input device used to direct a cursor on a screen to specific locations.
Cases Enclosures A computer case consists of the enclosure, a power supply and cables. Various computer cases do exists of varying colour, size and shape.
Video cards A video card displays images and animation on a computer screen. Video cards are also known as graphics cards and graphics accelerators.

Audio cards Audio cards deliver high quality theatre sound, usually 5.1 audio in high definition. Audio cards also have MIDI capability and modern audio cards have MP3 decoders built into them.
Multimedia Multimedia is any image, animation, video or audio that enhances a user's experience on a computer or notebook.
cables The cables connect each individual computer component to each other.
Computer peripheral A computer peripheral is a device that connects to a computer or notebook, such as a mouse, keyboard, modem and even a screen.
Computer screen
Computer monitor

A computer screen displays the image to the user. There are a number of different screen types, namely:

CRT (Cathode ray tube): The CRT screen is the standard screen used by most computer users and consists of a glass tube with a phosphor layer on the inside, the tube has no air and is a vacuum. Light is emitted when electrons emitted from an "electron gun" is fired at the phosphor.

LCD (Liquid crystal display) / TFT : The TFT screen is a thin, flat screen with individual pixels that are lit up by means of transistors in the screen itself. LCD screens are not made of glass, and are very light and thin.

Plasma screens: Plasma screens are similar to LCD except that they are filled with a gas that emits light when activated. Plasma screens can be made very large but since they are gas filled, the gas eventually dissipates and the screen has a very limited lifetime. The lifetime is specified by the supplier in hours. Most plasmas have a lifetime of approximately 10 years when used for approximately 4 hours a day.

Modem A modem (Modulator/demodulator) is a computer device that is used to connect to other computer systems, such as a server at an ISP, through an analog line (a telephone connection). The correct usage of modem is in an analog situation, sometimes users call ADSL devices and ISDN a modem, which is incorrect since these are digital devices and no signal modulation or demodulation occurs.
Printers

Printers are used to transfer images and text onto paper. There are number of different types of printers and these include:

Inkjet printers: An inkjet printer uses ink to form images on paper. The ink is squirted onto the paper by very small nozzles on the printer itself, or on the ink cartridge.

Laser printers: laser printers are fast printers that uses a toner and a laser or infra red system to transfer and set the toner powder onto paper. Laser printers are expensive to buy, but their running costs are less than inkjet printers. The quality of text and the speed of laserjet printers makes them ideal for office use and high volume printing.

UPS

A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, is a device that consists of a battery and electronic power converters, and is used as a "go-between" the electrical mains and a computer.

The UPS will switch over when a power failure occurs, and this will enable you to continue working even when the power is off.

UPS has limited battery storage, and the UPS is normally used to enable you to save your work and shut the system down safely.

PC components

A component is a specific computer electronic part that is used to build up the computer system. A computer and notebook consists of many components.
